From a Student's Perspective...

A reader writes:

Our society becomes more and more dependent on technology everyday. How are students expected to be successful after school if they can't get the education required to work with the new technologies? My generation finds the idea of a paperless classroom strange and I'm not even out of college yet. If I am already so far behind I can't imagine what it is like to be in a high school using out of date computers or even worse no computers at all.

  1. That student is right on. How many jobs are there today that don't rely on some sort of technology (computer, GPS, handheld, etc.)? Even my corner coffee shop manages things online and has a webpage to manage.

You can't be successful without that knowledge. Yet, as a middle school teacher, I sit in a classroom with one teacher computer. Fortunately, I believe in the need for tech and have sought these things out for my students (Smartboard, clickers). In addition, I spend one day in the computer lab each week.

Is that enough? Not by a long shot. The first thing I do in the morning is pull out my laptop and check headlines. At work, I log in and check my email. And when my students come into my class, they pull out a pencil and paper and start working. How is this effective?
